Commercial auto insurance for 12-vehicle fleet — what am I supposed to be paying?

Running 12 commercial vehicles (mix of vans and box trucks) out of San Antonio. Currently paying $28,400/year for commercial auto. My broker says that's competitive but I have no way to verify that. Anyone else with a fleet in the 10-15 vehicle range — what are you paying and who are you with? Also open to broker recommendations.

Claire from Bayou Insurance — $28,400 for 12 vehicles is roughly $2,367/vehicle. For commercial auto with a mix of vans and box trucks, Texas market typically runs $1,800-$3,200/vehicle depending on driver history, cargo type, and radius of operation. So you're in range, but the wide variance means there's potentially room to optimize. Key factors that could get you lower: driver safety training records, telematics (GPS/dash cam usage), and whether your vehicles have any claims history. Happy to do a no-obligation review — I'd want to see your current declarations page and loss run report for the last 3 years.

We actually just implemented Samsara GPS and dash cams this year. Does telematics data actually move the needle with insurers or is it mostly marketing?

It's real — some carriers offer 5-15% discounts for verified telematics programs. Samsara specifically is recognized by several carriers we work with. The catch is you typically need 6-12 months of clean data before they'll apply the discount. Start documenting now.
