Is hiring a marketing agency worth it for a small boutique? Real talk.

We've been approached by two different agencies. One wants $2,500/month for 'social media management and SEO.' The other wants $1,200/month for Google Ads management only. I'm skeptical because I can post on Instagram myself and I don't fully understand what I'm paying for. Has anyone actually seen measurable ROI from a marketing agency at our scale (small retail, ~$40k/month revenue)?

Angie from Bluepoint Marketing. I'll be honest because I think it earns more trust than a pitch: At $40k/month revenue, a $2,500/month agency retainer is 6.25% of revenue just for marketing management — before ad spend. That's a high bar to clear. Google Ads at $1,200/month management fee can make sense IF the person managing it actually knows what they're doing and you're also putting real budget into the ads themselves. Ask for their Google Ads certifications and case studies from retail clients. For Instagram at your scale — yes, you can probably do it yourself if you're consistent. The real question is whether your time is worth more than what they'd charge.

I really appreciate the honest answer. The 6.25% framing is helpful — hadn't thought about it that way. Do you work with boutique clients?

We do — boutique retail is a good fit for us because it's very visual and local. DM me and I can share some examples of what we've done for similar clients.

From a branding angle — sometimes the highest ROI for a boutique is physical: updated signage, branded bags, good window graphics. Customers see it every day. I'd run a good print campaign before I paid $2,500/month for social media management.

Tony from MetalMark — 100% agree. We've done window graphics for boutiques where the owner said foot traffic noticeably increased after. Hard to measure precisely but the store looked like it belonged in the neighborhood.
